The Big 5 for Mental Health

  1. Restorative Sleep - Sleep has many benefits for mental health. It helps manage our emotions, lets us hold onto everything we learn, and when we have a deep sleep, our brain gets a chance to clean itself. Rest can also give us time to pray and strengthen our spiritual well-being.
  2. Physical Activity - This is one of the best ways to manage stress. Getting active is good for your body, and good for your mind too. Movement can lessen the effects of mental health disorders. Many people also find that being active can also be a time to connect with God, such as while walking outdoors.
  3. Positive, Supportive Relationships - Good quality relationships and a support system you can count on are important for a healthy life. We need people we can count on, starting with our family and friends, and our relationship with God.
  4. Healthy Nutrition - Like physical activity, nutrition is important to our physical health. Power and nourishment from a well-balanced diet impact the way we learn and think, and the way we handle stress. Taking time to give thanks for the food we have nurtures our gratitude and faith.
  5. Helping Others - When we help someone else, we're not just helping them, we're also boosting our mood and lowering our stress. We feel good when we can share some good with others. Serving others reflects the compassion and kindness Jesus teaches us.
